Digg!

I just saw a great segment on the Today Showhttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21693298/ this morning about competitive moms.

You know the type—they brag because their infants communicate in sign language, little Noah was walking at 9 months and precious Ava was reading by three. Their children attend only the “best” preschools and the birthday party goodie bags they hand out after the festivities probably cost more than the present your child brought to the event. If you live in Loudoun County and are a mother, you’ve run into one of these women.

How do you cope with the sanctimonious “Sancti-mom?”

I'm just as guilty as the next mom when it comes to bragging a bit about my kids (and I've got 4 of 'em - see I did it a little there!) However, I don't think it's the pride in our kids' accomplishments, however small, that sets others off. It's those who seem to go above and beyond the rational and then brag about it. Our kids are kids, not status symbols, and when we see them being waved as such in front of our noses, it can be annoying. But, like Elizabeth said, brag away. Our silence toward the repeat offenders may make more of a difference than anything that we might say.

Your son is adorable. Brag away. You can brag about your beautiful daughter and your wonderful husband too! When a woman tells a friend about her child's accomplishment there is no harm. A true friend will be happy to hear it. If someone is annoyed by your comment then they are not a friend. If you are walking around telling total strangers about your child then that's bragging. Probably they are annoyed becasue they don't really care or they are jealous.

Hulya, everyone needs to "brag" about their kids a little-- we're all so proud of our kids and the things they do! It's the one-upmanship that I think most people find annoying. I, personally, haven't experienced much of it (thank goodness!), but I hear other moms-- especially first time moms complain about it.

I am a little guilty of bragging about my son. Everytime I do it, I feel terrible. I can't help myself. I really should.
