What’s Raw Got to Do with It?

When it comes to food, some believe… everything. There is a slow moving food trend in the county where more and more people looking for better health, longevity and freedom from illnesses are turning to, raw foodism. Raw foodism is the consumption of uncooked, unprocessed, and organic foods in one’s diet. It also means no processed ingredients like sugar, meat, dairy, or preservatives. It is believed that raw foodism encourages weight loss, prevents sickness and provides the foodies with more energy. It all sounds good to me, but there must be a catch. It probably tastes like raw food.

Recently I found a modern mom of 6 and a modern chef, Rebecca Irey, who started her own business offering raw foodist the option to eat healthy without the work. She owns Pure Market Express, a ready to eat food delivery service that brings the raw to your door. I was skeptical about the taste and asked her to send me a typical delivery.

What I got in the mail was a variety of goods ranging from lasagna to banana cream pie packed in a cute little Styrofoam ice box filled with dry ice. I didn’t tell my family exactly what they were tasting and my kids loved the non cracker crackers made from nuts and seeds and pressed into flatbread cracker shapes. I also did not tell them that the carrot salad they were eating had raw sweet potatoes grated in it. They also had to idea the chocolate cheesecake had to dairy or sugar in it. So the verdict: we loved it.

I can see these handy, ready to eat servings of raw food becoming a part of our already heavily Mediterranean diet.

But according to an article on WebMD, there are times when cooking is simply better.
My 8 year old who won’t touch veggies may not be into this movement, but my 2 year old is eager to try. The most important point here is, whether you eat all raw, or try Rebecca’s fantastic new company, you should (yes SHOULD) incorporate less processed, more organic healthy foods into your and your family’s diet. It is our responsibility as modern moms.

excellent article and very informative. Who would have thought that some cooked foods give you more nutrients than raw?smilies/smiley.gif
