I recently purchased a spicy Turkish Ketchup from my local Mediterranean Market in Ashburn and when I looked at the I was surprised at the simplicity of the ingredients listed in the back. They are tomato paste, sugar, vinegar, red hot chili pepper and special herbs. I decided to compare it to the ingredients listed in the back of a Heinz Ketchup bottle. Here is what I read, tomato concentrate made from red ripe tomatoes, vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, salt, spice, onion powder, and natural flavors.I know that sugar is not necessarily good for you, but I prefer it to high fructose corn syrup and/or corn syrup especially with so many American kids now suffering from childhood diabetes. If you feel the same try buying ketchup made from organic tomatoes sans corn syrup.
By the way, did you know that Ketchup came from China. according to a Wikipedia article "Ketchup-like sauces originated in eastern Asia as a spicy fish sauce called Ké Tsiap (茄汁)." Very interesting to read.
