In November of this past year I was a competitor on Food Network Challenge Lego Cakes, an 8 hour televised cake competition that pitted myself and an assistant against three other top cake decorating teams. At the end of the day our team prevailed by creating a three and a half foot tall Lego world, all from cake and frosting. Our prize for the win was a $10,000 check and I topped it off with on air proposal to my longtime girlfriend (she said yes by the way). This experience showcased my ability to create cakes that don't look like cake. This style of cake is no longer limited to the traditional grooms cake.
Lately I've been doing more and more wedding cakes that guests look at and go "that's really cake? wow!". This was especially true with a couple that I worked with, Amber Schroader and Greg Kipper, both were on their second marriage. At our consultation they included their young children in the planning process, the result was an entirely edible cake sculpture that included star trek ships, a moon, house, planet earth, a book, their pet dogs, and a Lego person to represent each family member. The great thing about the design was that each item represented something that had a special meaning to each one of them, it all came together to solidify the joining of their two families, and it was awesome!
If you're wondering what this crazy cake looked like I've attached a photo.Join me at the Hunt Country Celebrations Bridal Expo on March 18th from 12 to 4 at the National Conference Center in Lansdowne and register to win a free wedding cake from me!
