The "View" of Politics

What's with the politicians appearing in daytime talk shows? During the election campaign, we watched candidate Obama dance for the audience of Ellen and his wife appear on the View. I think that candidate McCain also appeared in person on the View among other daytime talk shows. This was probably done to attract female voters to one camp or another. I recently learned that Hillary Clinton, our Secretary of State, appeared on the Turkish version of the "View", called, Haydi Gel Bizimle (Come be with us). She discussed topics related to US-Turkish relations and the region. I am not against politicians appealing to female audiences, but is daytime TV the best place for policy discussions?

What is the purpose for these appearances? I realize that TV News in general is becoming more and more tabloid like. Just look at CNN's coverage of Nadya Suleman while the country is suffering from one of the worst economic crisis. I can't help but draw on the similarities of the last days of the Roman Empire. But why are politicians helping out with this trend by appearing on their fluff programs? Tell me what you think?
