The White House released the first official portrait of our First Lady, Michelle Obama earlier this week. Always known for her stylish looks and healthy biceps, this Modern Mom marks a new first in the White House. The First Lady without sleeves and killer arms.Being a relatively well-traveled individual, I have a decent knowledge of the many cultures in the western world. Having said that, I find that the US is generally a conservative nation. For instance, one rarely can see Sex-Shop display windows adorned with the latest in state-of-the-art pleasure gadgets, nor a slew of light narcotics on café menus (Amsterdam). Nor can one witness prostitutes queued up on major Boulevards, as if in some sort of perverted assembly line (Czech Republic).
So in this country of rather soft spoken gentry and preservation, for some, our First Lady doesn't wear "proper" clothing with sleeves. Don't get me wrong, I am no fashion police nor an etiquette snob. You see, though not particularly conservative myself, I do believe that some instances do beg for proper attire, and sleeveless dresses just seem so, well, not proper. In this portrait, I love her look as I often do. During her appearance at the Senate Address, not so much...
My question to you is this: Do we show our goods if they accentuate our most prized assets? Or should we cover up for the sake of tradition and rules? Should there even be any rules, or do fabulous biceps trump rules every time? What do you think?

I think the First Lady looks absolutely fabulous! Past First Ladies have been older and less liberal and modern when it came to fashion. Michelle is young, classy, confident and has amazing arms, plus she is not afraid to show them off. Way to go First Lady!

Ok. Ladies. I've asked an expert on this one-my nail tech. In her words, "Is this woman naricistic or what? Sure she's got great arms, but I'm sick of seeing them on every magazine cover. A first lady should dress like the chief of staff is expected to do at the White House. I never thought I'd say it; but she should call Laura Bush for some 'dressing like a first lady wardrobe hints.'"

I love the photo! Who says there are rules to what a first lady should or should not wear? She's not in shorts and a halter! She's wearing a classic double strand of pearls, has on a classic "little black dress", a gorgeous smile and killer arms. I say "You go girl!"

i agree, and where do we draw the line to appropriate?

You see, she is the not the first First Lady to wear no sleeves. Jackie O also wore a very very similar dress in red when she did her portrait. I love both dresses. I am modern and I think there are some areas and places that one should dress accordingly. If I were to meet the Pope, I would wear sleeves. If I was sitting in the Senate listening to the President, I would wear sleeves. If I were going out with friends, no sleeves. I just think, flip flops can also be dressy. So is it ok to wear that too since I have cute toes? I mean seriously people cool biceps still means you should dress appropriately.

Are we going to a bbq?

I am torn on a response to this subject. On the one hand, yours is a magazine and we are group, claiming to be modern. On the other hand, First Lady Obama should know better than dressing for bbq for an official photo. It's kind of like runway shows. You have to ask her, "would you wear this to the American History Museum?"
