Thai Basil at Ashburn, VA | Reviews

My son’s favorite Chicken Satay Restaurant: Thai Basil is located in the Boadlands Center Plaza next to Safeway. I recently reviewed 4 Thai restaurants located in Loudoun county. Once they were posted on the web site, I received numerous comments and e-mails from our readers saying that I missed the “best Thai Restaurant” in Loudoun. I was told that Thai Basil was a cut above all of them, and I am here to tell you that my son agrees that statement.

My entire family visited Thai Basil at 5PM. Place was empty as it can be expected. Decoration was typical of many strip mall based Asian restaurants with customary paintings, figurines and more. We ordered Thai Ice Teas and Tom Yum Goong soup with chicken. We were disappointed that the soup lacked spice and tasted almost as sweet as our Thai Ice Tea. Contrary to us, my son loved the soup.

We then ordered Crispy Rolls with mixed vegetables and cellophane noodles. They were fried and served with sweet and sour dipping sauce. We did not think that they were any different than any other spring rolls found in other Asian restaurants. It was too Americanized for our taste. My wife then ordered the Chicken Red Curry chicken with bamboo shoots, Thai eggplants and basil. I ordered boneless Crispy Duck, stir-fried with chilies, garlic and served in Thai basil sauce. They were both plain and lacked flavor. The only food that we all liked was their Chicken Sate. For those who do not know it is marinated white chicken meat grilled and served with peanut sauce and cucumber relish. The meat quality was very good. It was grilled to perfection and very juicy. The peanut sauce had a balanced flavor and the cucumber salad had just the right sweetness. If you want to have your kids try the Thai food, this is a good Thai-Light restaurant. For lovers of traditional Thai food, I recommend reading my other reviews.

October 2011 Just picked up a copy at my daughter's Little Gym class and found myself reading it instead of my Kindle! Enjoyed many of the essays, particularly the first year teacher at an inner-city school...and so many other articles. Kristine Meldrum Denholm, freelance journalist
