Ten Thousand Villages

Who we are: We are a global network of more than 350 Fair Trade organizations in 70 countries.

What is Fair Trade: Fair Trade provides underand un-employed artisans with an opportunity to earn vital income and improve their quality of life by establishing a sustainable market for their handcraft ed products.

How does Fair Trade work: In Fair Trade, buyers and sellers agree on a price that meets the buyers’ budgets, but still compensates the producers for material costs, labor, and profi t.

Why buy from a Fair Trade provider: Fair Trade supports artisans in developing countries who want the same things we do: food for their families, education for their children, and safe, comfortable homes.

Who does Fair Trade help: Consider Rosa, who together with her eight children, fled from her rural village in Peru aft er her husband was kidnapped. With no education, Rosa was unable to find work. She learned how to make toy alpacas and llamas to sell to tourists, but there was not enough business to support her family. An outreach worker admired her work and connected her with a Fair Trade partner in 1989. Within 15 years, Rosa was able to send her children to school, move into a house with plumbing and electricity, and open a workshop with several employees. Th is is the power of Fair Trade.

When you buy fairly traded handicrafts, you create a market for people like Rosa who are building new lives. Think of Fair Trade when you shop for that perfect gift for the holidays. Make a connection, share a story, become a partner with people like Rosa and hundreds of other artisans knowing that your Fair Trade purchase of handmade jewelry, home decor and gift s helps improve the lives of thousands of artisans in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

October 2011 Just picked up a copy at my daughter's Little Gym class and found myself reading it instead of my Kindle! Enjoyed many of the essays, particularly the first year teacher at an inner-city school...and so many other articles. Kristine Meldrum Denholm, freelance journalist
