I’ve been going to Karen from Eclips for years. That’s because I trust her styling sense. I actually had won a cut for this salon from an auction I attended. Until then I had been faithfully getting my hair done by a very well known salon in Fairfax. I used to walk out looking great, but never able to replicate it. Karen recommended adding some low and high lights and before she even cut my hair, I noticed a huge difference. I stopped in on a whim to get a very overdue haircut after the holiday season. Mesut, my stylist, suggested cutting off my long hair and going for a shorter look to complement my face. I was harried with having my children with me and told him to do what he thought was best for my face. In less than 10 minutes he took my long hair and created a very chic hairstyle for me.

Modern, feminine cuts are Khalil’s specialty.We went in with thin frayed ends and a cut that desperately needed some reshaping. In the process, we learned that our old technique of dry razor cutting and thinning could have been the cause of early damage on our coarse thick hair. His wet hair, scissor cutting technique and amazing round brush blowout left our tresses feeling super smooth and looking like the ones you see on a Victoria’s Secret model. Plus, not one frayed end in sight. Modern with a casual atmosphere, here you won’t find private or plush waiting areas, separate areas for coloring or decadent hair washing stations. The first time I went to Radiance Salon was in 2004. I had recently become a new mom and had gone from salon to salon with many horrible styles. That is when one of my friends told me about Jan from Radiance Salon in Broadlands. She said that Jan was the best in color and she could also fix my recent do, which I affectionately named high-top fade, picture Kate Gosselin with an Afro. I was a mess, hated my hair and thought no one could help me. Then I met Jan. She agreed with me about my horrible cut and color and immediately put me on her twelve-month program. Within a year my hair was healthy and long again. I have never seen any other stylist since. Jan has always been honest with me about my hair. And she never let's me leave the chair without a perfect blowout and straight iron treatment-I think she even has the pecs to prove it. I always love going to Radiance Salon. Not only do Jan and I get to catch up on our lives but I always receive a warm welcome from the staff. And it never hurts to take a break and have a glass of wine while you get beautified.

Husband and wife team, Michel Feghali and Jennifer North offer the moms of Metro DC a remarkable option for beauty and more services than you can imagine in their quaint salon, Salon Michele. Located in the heart of McLean, the salon is a fantastic retreat from the busy lives we lead and a great oasis of innovative techniques and products we all would love, from Siddha Body Detox, the Brazilian hair smoothening system (not what you were thinking, right), to foils, to multi dimensional color and partials. We had a single color process and a trim. Our hair was damaged, tired and lacked luster. In a single process he re-fired our hair and gave us our old confidence back. Now the cut: Well, Michele looked like an athlete getting ready to run his 5K, focused and confident. He studied our face, our head and our style. He dug in. He was so into it, by the time he completed, he looked like he fi nished sculpting a masterpiece of art. He trimmed, nipped, fl uff ed, nudged, and  brushed. I looked like a million bucks. I  always go home and wash my hair after a cut and color and give our verdict in front of the mirror at home. I didn't do that here. I knew this was good and it was!

Solace is a comfortable spa and I've had many other treatments there, including an unbelievable massage and several facials. But it is the haircuts that stand out for me. Every 6 weeks, I become   walking billboard with people asking me where I  had my hair styled. It's all about Michael. Michael Helene is a genius with color and a true artist in being able to know exactly what looks best on someone. I have never had a bad cut. From the comments I see on Facebook and I Am Modern, I'm not her only fan. Lately I've run into people whose haircuts I've admired and 9 out of
10 times they mention that Michael was  the stylist. Th e only problem is getting an appointment with her,  so I've learned to book 6 weeks in advance.
