Romance Guru: Tips for Healthy Relationships

couples talkingQ: So I've been dating this guy for 7 months and one day he tells me things are to serious and he is afraid, so he dumps me. Two weeks later he calls me telling me he loves me and thinks I'm the one... but that he wants to take things slow and date on the DL (downlow). We have been doing this for a month now with no one knowing... he doesn't act like he use to. He doesn't call or text me as often. I can go days without talking to him (he has a busy job) and we dont see each other very often with his new busy job. Should I be worried that he is using me for sex and putting me on hold until he figures out what he really wants? He did tell me he was worried someone else would take me away... I dont know what to do, stay or go.

Romance GURU: Run, don't walk.  Now let me tell you why.  Suppose for a minute that the situation were reversed, that you were dating a guy for 7 months and suddenly you tell him the very same things you've just been told.  You want to keep the relationship on the DL, you will not be available for days at a time, you will not send or receive his texts or phone calls until your 'busy job' allows, and you want sex with him whenever you are free.  How long do you think he would stick around?

Healthy relationships are built on respect, honesty and trust.  Romance and intimacy are more fulfilling when two people have a solid connection and strong relationship.  You deserve that.  Tell yourself daily that you are worthy, and find someone who shares that belief.

I wish you all the best,

The Romance Guru

October 2011 Just picked up a copy at my daughter's Little Gym class and found myself reading it instead of my Kindle! Enjoyed many of the essays, particularly the first year teacher at an inner-city school...and so many other articles. Kristine Meldrum Denholm, freelance journalist
