Loudoun Country Day School is pleased to announce that the "People's Choice" survey issued by "I AM Modern" magazine chose LCDS as the recipient of the "Best Private School K-8" in their August/September "Best of Suburbia Issue". According to Founding Publisher Hulya Aksu," on page 14 of the issue, "With so many choices, deciding the best for you and your family can be a difficult process...After an exhaustive month long voting process, we've compiled our very first 'Best of the DC Suburbs' issue as chosen by you, our dear readers.'" Headmaster Randy Hollister, with Loudoun Country Day School since 1988, acknowledges this honor, "We thank families for voting for Loudoun Country Day School. As we approach 60 years of educating children in northern Virginia, it is gratifying to know that we were chosen for the K-8 category. I have to add that we have an excellent prekindergarten for 4-year olds, as well!  Entering our 3rd year at our 69-acre campus here on Evergreen Mills Road, our program has expanded to include summer camps to all children, ages 5-14 in the region, including Fairfax Collegiate's enrichment programs, adventure camps, athletic camps, art and drama camps. Our own teachers add to these offerings, from Mrs. McMenamin's jewelry beading classes, Mrs. Edmonston's miniature sculpture classes, and Mrs. Shaw's perennial favorite Roxaboxen Camp."

LCDS is a coeducational, nondenominational program with a robust academic curriculum, as well as foreign languages, technology, physical education, art and music, including orchestra and band programs. The school features many hands-on activities, field trips, and visits by authors and community leaders. In addition, community service is emphasized. Our students and faculty supported several worthy organizations this year, including Alex's Lemonade Stand, the Holiday Coalition, Interfaith Relief Food Kitchen, Haiti Relief, and Wounded Warriors. Beyond that, LCDS has after-school programs, including After School Sports, a popular program that Coach Chip Ross began many years ago to provide additional physical activity and "plain old-fashioned fun", such as games of Capture the Flag. This May Coach Ross was honored by the President's Council on Fitness and Nutrition as one of 38 people honored in America, and was the first in Loudoun County to receive this award. Headmaster Dr. Hollister won the Washington Post's "Distinguished Educational Leadership Award" for 2002. The school has been also voted "Best Private School in Loudoun County" for almost as many years as the poll has been available through Leesburg Today.

The Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce unveiled the winners of the 2009 Small Business Awards last week. More than 425 business and community leaders attended the 15th annual event at Lansdowne Resort.

The nonprofit category was introduced this year to recognize the vital role nonprofits play in the economy and the entrepreneurial talents of the staff. Among the other categories were agriculture/equine, franchise, home-based and service business.

During a time when the economy is faltering, small businesses can struggle as well. But the lucky and hardworking ones can also continue to prosper. The Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce honored 10 standout small businesses in the county on Nov. 5 during its 15th annual small business awards.

While the total number of nominations for the award – more than 239 this year – and level of competitiveness is comparable to previous years, both large and small businesses have had to work harder through current economic conditions to keep their doors open, said Tony Howard, president and CEO of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce.
