Drinking Wine is Good for Everyone |
|
by Neil Smith
Drinking wine is good for your health, it enhances the flavor of foods and is a great way to relax and enjoy time with friends and family, and now it can also be good for your community. How, you ask?
Jim and Kristen Opalka had spent countless hours watching their premature baby, Avery Quinn, grow strong in neo-natal intensive care. Modern healthcare practices and technology helped guarantee that Avery, born eight weeks early, would eventually go home with her parents. The Opalkas, owners of a wine distribution company in Virginia, felt especially grateful to the March of Dimes for its role in advancing baby healthcare and enlisted Reed Renaudin (winemaker for X Winery) to create a line of California wines they called “Avery Quinn.” Jim and Kristen donated a portion of the proceeds from this wine to the March of Dimes.
This approach, called “cause-related marketing”, is increasingly common and a great way for winery owners to “give back” to society. While some consumers might view this as just another sales tactic, it’s important to remember that there are real people behind many of these wineries who have sincere reasons for wanting to support good causes. Other notable “wines with a cause:”
• Big Tattoo Wines (Various wines from around the world): Benefits Virginia Hospice and Breast Cancer Research
• Fire Station Red Wines (Shiraz and Zinfandel from California): Benefits the United Way Southern California Wildfires Recovery Fund; WineSmith also donates $2 to the Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department for every bottle sold
• Graham Beck Gamekeeper’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon: Benefits a wildlife conservancy on the Graham Beck estate designed to protect several endangered species
Next time you’re shopping for wine, take a look at the front and back labels to see if there is some kind of non-profit organization that will benefit from the purchase of that wine. While your purchase won’t qualify as a tax writeoff, you might at least feel good knowing that your enjoyment of that wine is helping a good cause!
