Situated just at the edge of historic city of Hillsborough (established in 1752), Hillsborough Vineyards encompasses both the last few acres from Lord Fairfax’ estate (originally 2,500 acres) and a house build in the 1820’s by David Lovett (Founder of Lovettsville, VA). Owned and operated by the Baki family, Hillsborough Vineyards is the fruit of true family labor and love. Father Bora Baki, a native of Istanbul, Turkey is no stranger to agriculture. He grew up in a family that cultivated grapes and apricots in his native country. Mother Zeynep Baki, also a native of Turkey, cooks delicious meals for the hundreds of visitors that come in waves during the weekend. Their son Kerem is a graduate of Virginia Tech with a Master degree in Enology (study of winemaking). The Bakis found the land in 2001 while on an outing to the countryside. Luckily, they were able to see past the abandoned lot that looked like “a poison ivy field,” opening Hillsborough as the 10th vineyard in Loudoun County. To create their blended wines, the Bakis raise the Viognier grapes on this beautiful 13 acres of land and purchase Chardonnay grapes from other Virginia vineyards. “We are at the beginning of a wine boom, and the Viognier will be to Virginia, what Pinot Noir was to Oregon,” says Bora. We liked all of their wines, but our favorites were the Serefina (Rosé) and the Bloodstone Reserve 2005 (Red). There is also a delicious desert wine called Moonstone, a blend of Viognier and Chardonnay, that begs for an apricot tart. Hillsborough wines are available at Clyde’s or Tuscarora Mills. However, if you are looking for a beautiful setting for a weekend outing, private party, or a wedding, you owe it to yourself to join the Bakis at the Hillsborough Vineyards for one of their daily wine tasting.
