The Baby Buzz provides free educational seminars to support new families from before birth through the earliest years.

Maureen Carey-Back is a wife, mother and business owner. She is an International Board certified Lactation Consultant working with over 200 mother-baby pairs a year. She lives in Waterford, VA with her husband of 23 years, John Back and their three children, Jeff, 19, Jessica, 16 and Al, 13.

Maureen became interested in the field of lactation after the birth of her first child. What began as a volunteer support program while living in Pennsylvania, grew to a licensed private practice. After years of working at a local hospital, she felt called to reach into the community and support the women of Loudoun County by providing options, education and one on one support for breastfeeding. From this passion grew The Baby Buzz, which provides free educational seminars to support new families from before birth through the earliest years. Maureen also supports Mary’s House of Hope in Purcellville, which is a transitional home for pregnant homeless women. Her business provides the gift of time and 5% of annual sales to the center. She is Modern Mom with a voice and a vision.

Definition of a Modern Mom A Modern Mom is committed to her family, has a sense of self, is confident, spiritual and passionate about her work wether she is working outside the home or working as a stay at home mom. A Modern Mom is both a mother and woman who not only wants to make difference in the life of her family but also in the life of her community.

Greatest accomplishment My children. Nurturing and seeing them develop the wings of self-confidence towards independence.

Know yourself I think as a woman and mother I am always learning. My forties have been an exciting type of metamorphosis. Learning, loving and giving is how I live my life.

Balance between life and motherhood Keeping things in perspective and staying grounded. I was a stay at home mom for 16 years and loved every minute of it. My life is busy now in a different way, with my own business, volunteering and still with my family.

Romance No tricks. I love my husband, the rest is easy.

Biggest splurge, guilty (guiltless) pleasure Shoes, massage and a really, really nice good bottle of Merlot!

Role model My friend Lisa. She is battling Stage 4 breast cancer with grace. Your inspiration I am inspired by good hearted, loving, kind people .

Plastic surgery. Have you had any? No, I have not had any plastic surgery. I feel that that is an individual choice for woman.

One advice to other moms Look at you kids, embrace your children, share in their experience, and celebrate

Biggest challenge you had to overcome in your life Over coming an eating disorder that I had for 10 years when I was a competitive gymnast.
