Making Work at Home Work For You

making_work_athome1When Virginia Woolf said that a woman needs a room of her own, she wasn’t kidding. Whether you’re running your own business, telecommuting, or being the CEO of your family, every Mom needs a command center. And even though the corner office that you deserve may not fit into your house, kitchen designers and cabinet manufacturers are ready to help you create the space you need to run your home, your family, and your life. Your kitchen wears many hats, just like you do! Moms are caregivers, financial providers, cooks, chauffeurs… the list goes on and on. And these days, kitchens are for cooking, entertaining, homework, storage and home offices. Like you, your kitchen wears many hats. So how do you make everything fit in?

One thing that cabinet manufacturers have focused on is the “family organization station.” A central point for family communications, schedules, cell phone charging, purses, keys, coats and back packs, this station would be made up of modules or component parts (in stock sizes or built-to-suit) tailored to fit individual family needs.

Need a place to keep your charging cords, laptops and backpacks? Want some nooks to store your notes, warrantees, recipes and other important stuff? Or do you maybe need a place for your kids to dump their gear so that it won’t end up all over the presentation you’re working on? Talk to your kitchen designer about your family’s habits and what you need to make your organization station truly organized!

But what if the command center won’t fit in the kitchen? It’s true, not every kitchen is big enough to hold Mom’s command center. (And let’s face it; sometimes you just need a place to work where the spaghetti won’t end up in your briefcase!) With the many sizes of components that are available, your organization station can easily be tucked into an entry foyer, hallway, mud room or laundry. And with a variety of styles and colors to choose from, you never have to compromise on the good looks of your home.

And what about a room just for you? If you, like Virginia, are fortunate enough to have a room of your own, you owe it to yourself to make sure it works for you! What do you need to make your workspace both beautiful and functional: Two desks and filing cabinets, maybe some built-ins to organize your equipment? How about a desktop that wraps around the room, with storage space and file drawers tucked underneath? The same varieties of storage options available for kitchens are available for your home office.

By using some of the many types of cabinetry components and build-to-suit options, your command center/ organization station can be affordably integrated into any space in your home, whether it’s part of your kitchen, an attractive stand-alone unit outside of the kitchen, or in a room of your very own! Talk to your designer about how to make “work at home” work for you!
