Local Wineries in Virginia

local wineriesIf I asked you to name an award winning wine region would the first thought be somewhere in Australia, France, or Italy? Closer still, you might think of Napa Valley in California. But if Virginia doesn’t come to mind, you are probably missing out on some great local wineries that are worthy of your visit. In addition to the wines, you will be treated to some breathtaking views, good food, good company and fun events. Virginia boasts an astounding array of quality vineyards and wineries.

Tarara Winery, located in Leesburg and near the banks of the Potomac River, has been in operation since 1989. Tarara’s specialties lie in the Bordeaux classics of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. With a summer-long concert series and apple picking during the warmer months, this winery remains a desirable location for the whole family.

Quattro Goomba’s Winery, which is located near the village of Aldie, produces a limited number of Mediterranean style wines using grapes from Chile, Italy and California. Quattro Goomba is the culmination of the efforts of three wine-loving friends who have a shared interest in the craft and creation of wine. During the summer months look for their BBQ and music events.

October 2011 Just picked up a copy at my daughter's Little Gym class and found myself reading it instead of my Kindle! Enjoyed many of the essays, particularly the first year teacher at an inner-city school...and so many other articles. Kristine Meldrum Denholm, freelance journalist
