Learning While Having Fun This Summer |

As summer approaches, our children are getting ready to sleep in, watch TV, play outside and generally take pleasure in each day that school is out. For parents, it is also a time to work on activities with their children, and a time to make sure they will not forget the academic skills of the preceding school year. There is no doubt that children are sponges soaking in information and knowledge, but they also need to have fun. So this summer here are a few activities and ideas that will keep you and your kids busy, having fun, and continuously learning.
1. Choose an activity book and make a calendar of lessons to complete.
2. Make a list of books that your child wants to read and keep it in a prominent place. Refer to it often. As your child finishes the book go to the library or bookstore to choose another one. Talk about the story and what it means and what your child found most and least fascinating. This is a great opportunity to increase your child’s vocabulary and grammar skills. If you can, read the book at the same time.
3. Choose a science project to do together each week or every other week. There are many websites that have age appropriate projects for children.
4. Check out Washingtonian.com and iammodern. com for great exhibits and performances in the area. We are fortunate to be close to DC, Maryland and many parts of Virginia, make use of everything our area has to offer!
5. Eps.com has great workbooks for children of all ages to keep them challenged and constantly learning. These workbooks can be used to enhance already learned subjects or work on new concepts.
6. Scholastic.com has great books, videos and learning activities. Above all, have a good time with your kids and enjoy each other’s company this summer.
