The answer to that question– most modern refrigerators DO NOT filter out fluoride (when you replace it - read the label and it should state that). Brita filters as well DO NOT filter out fluoride. Depending on how old the child is and history of decay would determine how much other fluoride sources would be necessary to help prevent against decay. I suggest using at least fluoridated toothpaste (toddler toothpaste if younger than 8) and a daily fluoride rinse such as ACT for kids and having the permanent molars sealed once they have fully erupted. Some children do need more fluoride that is prescribed by their dentist if they are considered at higher risk of getting decay. It’s best to see a pediatric dentist to get more information.

Lynne Martin

I saw your Q&A;on flouridated water in the Winter '08 issue. I have a concern not about ingesting too much but rather how to get enough. I'd like to know if the filters in most modern refrigerator water dispensers filter out flouride. If they do, will using flouridated toothpaste provide my son enough flouride to protect against decay or do we need to pursue additional sources? - Lynne Martin
