Q: How Often Does a woman need a Pap Smear?Dr. Ayoub: The best answer is that the recommendations are changing rapidly and to make sure you get to know your OB/GYN and stay current on the most recent recommendations.
A synopsis of the current guidelines are as follows:
1- 1st pap smear age 21, not before even if sexually active.
2- Paps should be done every 2 years from age 21-29 as long as none are abnormal. If they are abnormal then they are needed yearly.
3- After age 30, if PAP/HPV is negative or 3 consecutive normal pap smears then every 3 years is recommended.
4- Last pap 65 or 70 years old as long as 3 consecutive normal paps.
Exceptions to above recommendations needing paps yearly are women who are immunosuppressed ie. HIV or have been treated for precancerous cells/lesions in the past.
Remember, a pap does not equal an annual exam! An annual is needed every year to assure that there are no abnormalities or problems in the reproductive tract ie. pelvic and breast exam to rule out gynecologic cancer and/or breast cancer.
