High 5 For Summer!

summermakeupSummer on the east coast is in full force.  This hot weather can make you feel like you are melting on the inside; the trick is to keep your makeup from melting on the outside.  Sure a dewy glow is nice, but an oil slick – I think not.  Less really is more during the summer.  Take a look at these 5 makeup must haves for summer:

1.  Tinted Moisturizer – Summer makeup should be light, quick and easy.  Instead of a heavy foundation, try a tinted moisturizer to hydrate and even out your skin tone.  Press a little concealer on areas that need a bit more coverage.  Try Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer that has an SPF of 20 and also comes in an oil-free formula.

2.  Bronzer – Nothing is prettier than the sun-kissed look bronzer gives you.  The trick is to place it where the sun would naturally hit you like your forehead, cheeks, and nose.  I also like to place a little under my jawline and blend down to my neck.  One of my all time favorites is Smashbox Suntan Matte Bronzer.

3.  Cream Cheek Color – A cream blush is nice for summer because it absorbs into your skin.  The best way to apply it is to “press it” on to the skin versus “swipe it” so that it really adheres to your cheeks.  Want to cut down on the number of products in your makeup bag? A cream cheek color can also be applied to the lips for a pop of color.  Bobbi Brown makes a nice pot rouge for cheeks and lips.

4. Waterproof mascara  - Whether you are swimming in the ocean or sitting out by the pool- a great waterproof mascara will prevent you from having the dreaded raccoon eyes.  The only downfall – some waterproof mascaras are very hard to completely remove.  You might need to invest in one specifically formulated to remove waterproof mascara.  Remember to saturate your cotton pad and let the product do all of the work so you don’t damage your lashes.  A drugstore brand I really like is Neutrogena’s Healthy Volume Waterproof mascara.

5.  Lipgloss – Nothing says summer like beautiful glossy lips.  Layer it over a lip stain for more staying power or wear it alone for a natural look.  Trends this summer include coral, watermelon, and peach colored glosses.  Not feeling that bold?  You can always stick with the rose-colored tones that look great on so many skin tones.

Now that you know how easy summer makeup can be, go enjoy your summer and get your glow on!

Hi Kim,
Love your wonderful ideas and like the brands that you prefer too!! Absolutely love Bobbie Brown cheek and lip pot colors....one I love is in the coral tones and if my cheek color is more on the pink side, I just dab a little on both cheek and lip and I'm good to go!! Keep up the great work and looking forward to hearing more interesting information from you....you go girl!!!!!

October 2011 Just picked up a copy at my daughter's Little Gym class and found myself reading it instead of my Kindle! Enjoyed many of the essays, particularly the first year teacher at an inner-city school...and so many other articles. Kristine Meldrum Denholm, freelance journalist
