By Dr. Valerie Woo There are many benefits and risks associated with children’s fluoride consumption and we regularly receive questions from families in our practice about the need and safety of their child’s fluoride intake. Following are a few important questions we have been asked: Q: Is fluoride important to my child’s health?
Q: Is Loudoun County public water fluoridated? Dr. Val: Yes. Loudon County public water contains fluoride, but many families have well water, with varying fluoride levels. Drinking water should be tested to ensure a proper amount of fluoride. The Loudoun County Health Department (www.co.loudoun.va.us/health/fluoride.html), or your local pediatrician or pediatric dentist, can provide this important test. Q: What kind of toothpaste should my child use? Dr. Val: Baby tooth cleanser for very young and fluoridated toothpaste for older children (>2.5 yrs old).Young children using fluoridated toothpaste need monitoring to ensure they are spitting when brushing. These children are at highest risk of fluorosis and permanently damaging developing adult teeth. Always obtain fluoride level test results for your drinking water before giving fluoride supplements to your child! Set as favorite Bookmark Email This Comments (2)

The answer to that question– most modern refrigerators DO NOT filter out fluoride (when you replace it - read the label and it should state that). Brita filters as well DO NOT filter out fluoride. Depending on how old the child is and history of decay would determine how much other fluoride sources would be necessary to help prevent against decay. I suggest using at least fluoridated toothpaste (toddler toothpaste if younger than

and a daily fluoride rinse such as ACT for kids and having the permanent molars sealed once they have fully erupted. Some children do need more fluoride that is prescribed by their dentist if they are considered at higher risk of getting decay. It’s best to see a pediatric dentist to get more information. report abuse

I saw your Q&A;on flouridated water in the Winter '08 issue. I have a concern not about ingesting too much but rather how to get enough. I'd like to know if the filters in most modern refrigerator water dispensers filter out flouride. If they do, will using flouridated toothpaste provide my son enough flouride to protect against decay or do we need to pursue additional sources? report abuse
