High 5 For Summer!

summermakeupSummer on the east coast is in full force.  This hot weather can make you feel like you are melting on the inside; the trick is to keep your makeup from melting on the outside.  Sure a dewy glow is nice, but an oil slick – I think not.  Less really is more during the summer.  Take a look at these 5 makeup must haves for summer:

1.  Tinted Moisturizer – Summer makeup should be light, quick and easy.  Instead of a heavy foundation, try a tinted moisturizer to hydrate and even out your skin tone.  Press a little concealer on areas that need a bit more coverage.  Try Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer that has an SPF of 20 and also comes in an oil-free formula.

ASK CHRIS: A Friend Wants Plastic Surgery

breastQ: A friend has asked my advice about whether or not she should get plastic surgery (breast augmentation). I think she looks great already - should I try to talk her out of it?

A: Plastic surgery is about more than just physical appearance. People elect to change their outside so they can feel differently about themselves inside. The most important thing you can do is provide support to your friend by asking questions about what she hopes to accomplish through surgery. Here are some guidelines:

The Lower Eyelid Dilemma

eyelidIn my field of expertise, one of the most difficult areas to improve is the lower eyelid tear trough (a combination of puffiness and hollowness), though I have found a combination of treatments that works.

In younger patients I use dermal fillers. My favorite for this area is Restylane®. If there is some atrophy of the cheek bone, I inject the cheek with Radiesse® for a lift to the cheek, which minimizes hollows.

With patients in their 40s and 50s, in addition to fillers in this area, I may add Botox® or Dysport® to decrease the crow’s feet around their eyes. To soften fine lines, I suggest either Fraxel® or TCA peels of their lower eyelid skin. For puffiness, I may recommend having the fatty pockets conservatively removed via an outpatient surgery called trans-conjunctival (inside the eyelid) lower eyelid blepharoplasty.

Talking Sex With Your Dentist

sex_dentistRecent and alarming studies have shown that the HPV virus, mistakenly called the “cervical cancer” virus is strongly associated with cancers of the mouth and throat. HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is one of the most common virus groups in the world today affecting the skin and mucosal areas of the body. Over 200 strains of HPV have been identified, and different types are known to infect different parts of the body. The most visible forms of the virus produce warts (papilloma's) on the hands, arms, legs, and other areas of the skin. Most HPV's of this type are very common, harmless, non cancerous, and easily treatable. Unfortunately, because it is largely asymptomatic, HPV can also go undetected for a long time, sometimes until it is too late to treat.

Staying Fit Locally, Quit Making Excuses

staying fitIt is predicted that, over the course of the present decade, Americans will be looking to spend less money on exercise options and a lot less time to it due to tighter budgets and hectic schedules. Combine that with a mostly unregulated commercial food industry that still relies heavily on inexpensive and low quality resources high in fat, salt and processed additives. Not enough time to move and poor food choices at the ready. This is our nation’s crisis with obesity, which is expected to climb as high as 85%, up from an already disheartening 60%. Prevention is possible, through awareness and a little creativity. While nutrition accounts largely for body fat content, exercise raises metabolism and muscle can fill up space previously occupied by fat cells. It’s a package deal. Making wholesome food choices (yes, it really is that easy—just do it) will give you energy to work burning fat. Local libraries are stocked with low-fat cookbooks and most cooking websites have search options for healthy recipes.

5 Things Your Doctor Isn’t Telling You About CPR

cprCPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation used to be very simple to understand. Cardio stands for heart, pulmonary stands for lungs and resuscitation means to revive from death. When a patient died, someone would push on the person’s chest to try to restart the heart while giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to help the person breathe. Over time, CPR has become more complex as healthcare professionals have discovered advanced ways to try to bring the person back to life. The patient may now be given medications, his heart may be electrically shocked with paddles placed on the chest, and he may be placed on a ventilator to help him breathe. What seemed like an easy question, “Does the person want CPR?” has turned into a more complicated decision.
