Something Borrowed and Something Blue: Did it strike a chord with you?
Digg!

This week, I picked up two books by author Emily Griffin: Something Borrowed and Something Blue. Both books have been on the NYT bestseller list and garnered gushing praise from readers. I received the books from a friend whose book club loved both selections so much that they’ve chosen Baby Proof, Griffin’s third novel, for their next selection.

Something Borrowed, the first book, is the story of childhood friends Rachel and Darcy. Rachel is a self-professed goody-two-shoes with limited romantic experience while Darcy is the golden girl who consistently dates dazzling, awe-inspiring guys. When the story begins, Darcy is engaged to Dex, a law school friend of Rachel’s. After a night of bar-hopping to celebrate Rachel’s birthday, Dex and Rachel sleep together. The rest of the book chronicles how Rachel and Dex deal with what happened that night.

I read the first one all the way through hoping I’d feel more connected to the characters, more interested in how their stories turned out but it never happened for me. The second book, Something Blue, focuses on Darcy, the very character Griffin vilifies in her first book. Darcy’s character—her bland egotism and school-yard pettiness—never provoked enough emotion in me to make me wonder what made her tick. So, I merely flipped through Something Blue.

Now, this is the beauty of a book club—exploring different perspectives. Many people have enjoyed this book –some appreciate Griffin’s ability to create sympathy for Dex and Rachel even though they’ve cheated and others like what the book says about love, friendship and taking chances. What has been your experience? If you’ve read them, send your thoughts to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ; if you haven’t, I can send you my copies. J
