 The Modern Mom Book club’s second selection will be Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Currently the number one nonfiction title on the New York Times bestseller list, Three Cups of Tea is a humanitarian adventure story rooted in failure. Mortenson, an avid mountain climber, trained to scale K2, the second highest mountain in the world, but failed to make the summit. Exhausted and disoriented from his treacherous descent, Mortenson finds refuge in Korphe, a small village in the Karakoram, the high-altitude mountain range that runs through Pakistan, China and India. As his health strengthens, so does his commitment to the people of the village. He promises the chief of Korphe that he will build them a school. That promise and the work poured into its incarnation have supported the establishment of fifty-five schools in the region. Anthropologist Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world”; Three Cups of Tea documents the truth of her statement.
