Murat's Blogs

Murat's Blogs by I AM Modern Magazine for Northern Virginia and Metro DC

From food to travel to life in general, Murat has a few words to say.

Keep the troops in your thoughts during Thanksgiving, but for the right reasons

Regardless of their nationality, I always feel very bad for young soldiers serving in the military. In some countries they are part of a volunteer army like the US, in others their service is mandatory, set by their constitution (Israel, Turkey).

Irrespective of how and why young people join the army, they have very little say in where they will be send to fight wars. They do what they are told and serve their commanders, countries and their governments.

I recently heard someone make a comment on the radio. I think the person said something like "I will keep the soldiers in my thoughts and prayers for they are protecting the freedoms that I enjoy here." In my opinion the last time our freedoms were protected was during World War II.

The Good Wife’s Guide

I saw that Hulya published a very funny blog about fathers competing in a “Survivor” series as pretend mothers. The blog perfectly depicted the life of a modern mom in our times. So I wondered what life was like for modern moms in the 1940s and 1950s. I came across this information from Housekeeping Monthly dated 13 May, 1955. The woman described in the article sounds like super mom meets Doris Day. Just as an FYI, I did not underline some of the bullet points.

Every Woman Wants to Rule the World, But Who Makes More Decisions at Home?

There is nothing nobler or more admirable than when two people who see eye to eye keep house as man and wife, confounding their enemies and delighting their friends” wrote Homer. Do we see eye to eye as men and women? Well.....

USA Today reported that Pew Research Center looked into the decision making habits of American couples on the topics of choosing shared weekend activities, buying things for the home, deciding what to watch on TV and managing household finances? Who do you think makes the decisions at home?

Take your junk e-mail seriously, you may have an e-mail from Mark Twain

You know, I never look at the emails in my junk inbox. What a mistake. One quick glance at it tells me that I have been wrong. Look at all of the things that I have been missing:

  • Apparently I have a friend in South Africa who has been trying to get in touch with me to wire $2.5 million for the last 6 months. What was I thinking to ignore this nice man? There is even an attached document from the government of South Africa.
  • Jane Robson wants me to contact her ASAP. I don't know Jane, but it sounds urgent. Maybe she has something that she wants to sell me. Like...
  • Cheap Rolex at 50% discount...
  • Acai drink to flush out 20 pounds...
  • A miracle drug to add 3 more inches to you know what....

Orangutan One Day and Human the Next?

I am a Mediterranean man and I’ve got too many hormones in my body. One of the many side effects of being a Mediterranean man is to lose your hair on your head and gain it in unwanted areas like inside your nose, ears, shoulders, back, throat and your chest all wrapped in one big hair ball.

Hair in your nose and ears, you can deal with. Shave it, pluck it, grab it, etc. You can also shave the hair on your throat. But what do you do with your back and shoulder hair? Nair is one alternative, but it seems that every time you use Nair, it acts as a fertilizer and all the hair comes back with a vengeance.

February 2012 Thank you for producing such a fun, current magazine full of great information. Wishing you continued (and BIG) success. Pamela Steuart.Fine Art
October 2011 Just picked up a copy at my daughter's Little Gym class and found myself reading it instead of my Kindle! Enjoyed many of the essays, particularly the first year teacher at an inner-city school...and so many other articles. Kristine Meldrum Denholm, freelance journalist
